MOSCOW KREMLIN

MOSCOW KREMLIN

The Russian Kremlin is one of Moscow's best known buildings, as evidenced by its naming as a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is in the center of Russia's capital and is the official residence of the country's president. The Moscow Kremlin is also one of the world's largest museums, with the history of Russia behind its walls.

Cathedral (Sobornaya) square

if the heart of Russia is the Kremlin, then its soul is the oldest area within the Kremlin, Cathedral Square, the so-called "City of God". To this day, as they have for many centuries, the domes of these legendary churches shine with gold, and on holidays their bells ring out across Sobornaya Square. This unique mix of medieval architecture gives a special feeling of the closeness of God and the uninterrupted links of time to anyone stepping across the square's white paving stones, restored in 1955.

Annunciation Cathedral

is a Russian Orthodox church dedicated to the Annunciation of the Theotokos. It is located on the southwest side of Cathedral Square of the Moscow Kremlin, where it connects directly to the main building of the complex of the Grand Kremlin Palace, adjacent to the Palace of Facets. It was originally the personal chapel for the Muscovite tsars, and its abbot remained a personal confessor of the Russian royal family until the early 20th century.

Assumption Cathedral

(or Cathedral of the Dormition) is a Russian Orthodox church dedicated to the Dormition of the Theotokos. It is located on the north side of Cathedral Square of the Moscow Kremlin. The Cathedral is regarded as the mother church of Muscovite Russia. In its present form it was constructed between 1475–79 at the behest of the Moscow Grand Duke Ivan III by the Italian architect Aristotele Fioravanti.

Assumption Cathedral interiors

From 1547 to 1896 it is where the Coronation of the Russian monarch was held. In addition, it is the burial place for most of the Moscow Metropolitans and Patriarchs of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Archangel's Cathedral

is a Russian Orthodox church dedicated to the Archangel Michael. It is located in Cathedral Square of the Moscow Kremlin, between the Great Kremlin Palace and the Ivan the Great Bell Tower. It was the main necropolis of the Tsars of Russia until the relocation of the capital to St. Petersburg. It was constructed between 1505 and 1508 under the supervision of an Italian architect Aleviz Fryazin Noviy on the spot of an older cathedral, built in 1333.

Ivan the Great Bell tower

is the tallest of the towers in the Moscow Kremlin complex, with a total height of 81 metres (266 ft). It was built in 1508 for the Russian Orthodox cathedrals in Cathedral Square, namely the Assumption, Archangel and Annunciation cathedrals, which do not have their own belfries. It is said to mark Moscow's precise geographic center (while the geometric center is the Saint Basil's Cathedral).

Tsar Bell

is the biggest bell in the world and is a 6.14 metres (20.1 ft) tall, 6.6 metres (22 ft) diameter bell on display on the grounds of the Moscow Kremlin. The bell was commissioned by Empress Anna Ivanovna, niece of Peter the Great. The present bell is sometimes referred to as Kolokol III (Bell III), because it is the third generation.

Tsar Cannon

is the biggest cannon in the world. It is a large, 5.94 metres (19.5 ft) long cannon on display on the grounds of the Moscow Kremlin. It was cast in 1586 in Moscow, by the Russian master bronze caster Andrey Chokhov. Mostly of symbolic impact, it was never used in a war. However the cannon bears traces of at least one firing. Per the Guinness Book of Records it is the largest bombard by caliber in the world.

Ceremonial of the equestrian and pedestrian procession of the President regiment

*The demonstration of the ceremonial of the equestrian and pedestrian procession of the President regiment runs on Saturdays at 12:00 in the Cathedral Square from April to October

ARMOURY CHAMBER

A world-wide known treasure-house presents ancient Russian regalia, ceremonial tsar's dress, church hierarchs' vestments, gold and silverware by Russian, European and Eastern masters, arms and armouries, royal carriages and horse ceremonial harness. The famous museum's exhibits are of special interest because of precious materials, high artistic level and their particular value for the history and culture of the Russian State.

Coronation dress

accessories and a coronation mantle of Russian Emperors and Empresses help to discover important features of the state coronation ceremony.Rare samples of pictorial artistic embroidery complete the display.

Carriage

The Armoury collection of carriages includes works by leading European and Russian carriage-makers as well  as architects and artists.

The basic part of the collection consists of cultic objects made in royal and patriarchal workshops of the Kremlin in the XV-XVIIth centuries. Many of them were created on orders of Great Moscow Princes, Russian Tsars and Metropolitans as donations to the Kremlin churches. Shrine covers of St. Cyril of Belozersk and Tsarevitch Dmitry are exhibited in a separate showcase.

Covers for icons, Gospels, liturgical goods and precious utensils, exhibited in the hall, were executed for court use in Kremlin Workshops in the time of their heyday. Although not numerous, cult objects by masters of Yaroslavl and Kostroma, nielloed and enamelled artworks of Solvychegodsk, Velikiy  Ustyug and Tobolsk are very interesting.

The complex of state regalia displayed in the hall - crowns, sceptres, orbs - has been historically formed on the base of the Kremlin treasury’s most ancient part. Regalia were an essential part of official ceremonies, such as  ceremonial royal passages, settings for reigning, coronations of emperors and receptions of foreign ambassadors. The complex includes the well-known " Cap of  Monomakh ". Up to the early XVIIIth century, all the tsars had been crowned with the Cap.

Jewellery articles by Faberge Firm

The large case of Faberge eggs, presents exchanged between the tsar and tsaritsa every Easter, is probably the highlight of the collection, including the famous Siberian Railway Egg.

The collection includes works by German, Dutch, English, Polish, Swedish and French masters. The majority of  exhibits have come to Russia as ambassadorial gifts. The collection of English Renaissance Silver is unique. German goblets are distinguished by original idea and plan, virtuosity of execution and unusual materials, e.g. nacre, rock crystal, ivory, coco shells.

Russian gold and silverware of the XIIth to early XVIIth century
